We’re delighted to announce a new entrepreneurial funding model that will extend the support options available to the USZ Foundation. It will create a philanthropic funding loop facilitating even more medical innovations that improve people’s quality of life.
How the philanthropic funding loop works
The USZ Foundation and its supporting partners grant loans to fund early-stage USZ start-ups via the USZ Health Innovation Hub at a point where profit-oriented investors are not yet prepared to get involved. If the start-up is a commercial success, earnings flow back to the USZ Foundation and are subsequently used to fund more medical innovations that benefit patients. This way we create a sustainable philanthropic funding loop in which the USZ Foundation can potentially use the funds multiple times, increasing the impact of every franc donated.
This entrepreneurial funding model has been approved by the cantonal tax authorities and aligns with Zurich’s practice regarding the tax exemption of charitable foundations that came into force in February 2024.
