In December 2016, University Hospital Zurich established an independent foundation to support the further development of medical technologies and innovations. Patients should be able to benefit from new and improved treatment methods quickly and directly. The Board of Foundation includes a number of well-known figures from business and academia.
Established in December 2016 as the USZ Foundation, the University Hospital Zurich Foundation is an independent private foundation of the University Hospital Zurich. It aims to deploy its resources to promote teaching, research, and treatment at UHZ. To this end, it supports the further development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in order that patients can benefit from new and improved treatment methods. The foundation also fosters the next generation of physicians. Outstanding specialists are supported in their training and further education. With their knowledge, they are expected to pave the way for medical innovations and thereby facilitate cutting-edge medical treatment to the direct benefit of patients.
A committed Board of Foundation
The foundation succeeded in attracting well-known figures from business and science to serve on its Board of Foundation. These individuals are committed to the foundation’s work. “It was important to us that the board enjoys broad-based support from representatives of UHZ and from the world of business, all of whom have a broad network of contacts. We are delighted that we were able to rely on such an expert group of people from the outset. All of them are committed to our work in a voluntary and private capacity,” says Dr. Thomas Wellauer, Group COO, Swiss Re, who serves as President of the Board of Foundation.

The initial capital is CHF 100,000. As the founder, UHZ also contributed CHF 1 million in the form of a one-off investment.
Donors who wish to support research and clinical treatment at UHZ can now do this within the context of the foundation. It is also possible to direct the donated sums to a specific specialist discipline.
