Until now, pathologists have relied on the human eye to examine tissue samples and make diagnoses. Under the microscope, they identify patterns that help them distinguish between malignant and benign tissue.
Faster and more accurate results
Holger Moch and his team now want to take this process to the next level and use state-of-the-art technologies for analysis. The result is not only faster but also more accurate diagnoses. In the future, artificial intelligence will also support the work of the experts.
From archive to digital treasure trove
To facilitate the transition to digital pathology, microscopic images must be digitally captured. In addition to the new samples received daily, the entire archive from the past 15 years is also to be scanned and subsequently stored digitally—an enormous treasure trove of data comprising nearly 6 million tissue samples.
A significant gain for research
If this data is available in digital form, it also greatly facilitates global exchange. This allows the University Hospital of Zurich to play an even more central role in international research. And the insights gained from this, in turn, benefit patients at the USZ.
