Dispensing with medicines

The fox tapeworm can cause major damage to the human liver. Until now, many of the people affected have had to take medication for the rest of their lives. This may now change. Thanks to a gift to the USZ Foundation from a former patient of USZ’s Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, a team of researchers around Professor Beat Müllhaupt (photo) has been able to conduct a trial showing that certain patients can come off their medication after two years. The key is regular imaging checks. The findings of the trial will help give patients a better quality of life, as well as reducing costs. Professor Müllhaupt and his team have been able to continue the project and clarify further questions about the disease.
