Four out of nine FreeNovation grants go to USZ

Novartis Research Foundation’s FreeNovation program funds unconventional projects with the potential to permanently alter the course of biomedical research. At USZ, support from the Novartis Research Foundation runs via the USZ Foundation.

In the course of the 2022 tender a prestigious international panel chose nine projects from all over Switzerland. Four of these grants go to researchers at University Hospital Zurich.

Dr. Srikanth Mairpady Shambat is investigating at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Hospital Epidemiology how the microbiome in our respiratory passages helps create an immune response to pathogens. Professor César Nombela Arrieta at the Department of Medical Oncology and Haematology is researching the role of specific cells in the bone marrow in terms of immune memory. Dr. Valentina Alice Rossi is doing research at the Department of Cardiology designed to help assess the risk of cardiovascular conditions more effectively by examining the blood vessels in the eye. Dr. Stephan Traidl at the Department of Dermatology is looking into how skin injuries activate the skin’s immune memory.

Congratulations! We wish these four project teams every success.
